Thursday Cheese Curds: NFL reveals expected 2025 salary cap range

The league is just about ready to lock in the cap number for this season and it’s even higher than expected.

One of the last big pieces of information that NFL teams will need to plan out their offseasons is almost set.

On Wednesday, the NFL informed teams in a memo of the expected range for the salary cap for the 2025 season. Last year’s base cap number was $255.4 million, and the general expectation for the 2025 cap was in the range of $272.5 million.

Instead, the expected number is even higher than that — by at least five million dollars, and perhaps more. That means the Packers, who were already expecting to have more than $40 million in salary cap space, will have still more money to work with this offseason.

Overthecap.com now projects the Packers to have $49 million in cap room and about $46 million in effective cap space, accounting for the projected rookie class’s contracts. That’s a bigger number than the team has had in quite some time, and it’s a big reason why the team is still being viewed as an option for multiple high-priced free agents.

Here’s that news on the cap and much more from mid-week.

The jump could go up as high as $281.5 million, and wherever the number lands it will represent a jump of more than $20 million from 2024.
