Bo Melton and Mecole Hardman are both in the news after the first two days of minicamp.

Through two days of minicamp, there’s a clear top story for the Green Bay Packers: Bo Melton’s tryout at cornerback. The Packers’ wide receiver has been spending a lot of time working with the corners over the past two days of practice, seemingly in an effort to find creative ways in which he may be able to help the team.

Melton is in a difficult position this summer, as are a host of players on this roster. The Packers simply have too many wide receivers, and something has to give. With the team spending early draft picks on Matthew Golden and Savion Williams and veterans like Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks all returning, that is probably five roster spots are already accounted for (barring any trades this summer). Christian Watson’s recovery throws a further wrench into the equation, and that leaves few opportunities — and roster spots — left over for the likes of Melton, Mecole Hardman, Malik Heath, and others.

Thus, any big plays or added versatility that one of these players can provide would go a long way to boosting their chances of making the team. For Melton, who played more than 140 special teams snaps last season, adding some extra value as an emergency corner could be a way for him to force his way back onto the 53 once again as a 6th or 7th receiver with extra versatility.

Meanwhile, Hardman is looking to stand out on offense after his arrival in free agency. He did just that on Wednesday, delivering a long touchdown on a 4th-down opportunity in a two-minute drill. He appears to be capable of delivering some of those big plays with his raw speed while also contributing to the offense as a ball-carrier, something Matt LaFleur loves. But he’s also fighting the numbers game at this point, and he’ll need to string together some more big performances and maybe make some big preseason plays as well.

The Packers return to the field for a third day of minicamp practice today before heading home for a summer break of nearly six weeks. Let’s see what revelations arrive today before that break.

Hardman did not sign a big contract this offseason, so he'll have to earn a roster spot in a crowded receiver room. Plays like his 75-yard touchdown on Wednesday will go a long way, however.

The Travis Hunter mentions are already flying, but let's not get ahead of things here. Melton is in a similar spot to Hardman and needs to distinguish himself somehow in order to make the team this fall.
