As training camp and preseason near, three Pittsburgh Steelers can make a case for themselves for bigger roles in 2025.

The Pittsburgh Steelers players, coaches, and other personnel report to Saint Vincent College in less than 24 hours. In the hot sun of Latrobe, head coach Mike Tomlin made it a point to schedule more afternoon practices. Three Steelers can make a big case for themselves in training camp to be key contributors in the 2025 season.

In one of the league’s notoriously physical training camps, there will be plenty of players vying for a job come final cuts. These camps with preseason have previously produced opportunities for under-the-radar guys like Jaylen Warren to become impactful contributors.

Here are three Steelers that can take a step forward in training camp, preseason, and into the 2025 regular season roster.

Roman Wilson

First, this is the most obvious one–and the Steelers are banking on it. As of now, it’s unlikely Pittsburgh swings for the fences to add another receiver. Wilson, similar to teammate Calvin Austin III, missed much of his rookie campaign to injury.

His training camp ankle injury wiped him out of all preseason play. Once he finally recovered, his lone active game against the Las Vegas Raiders was then cut short by a season-ending hamstring injury.

Wilson was once projected as a second-round pick in the 2024 draft. His notable acceleration off the line of scrimmage and tough play earned him a spot with the Steelers. After a solid beginning of offseason work, Wilson can establish a role for himself within the offense.

Sebastian Castro

Next, after trading away Minkah Fitzpatrick for Jalen Ramsey, the Steelers need depth at safety. While they could seek an outside answer, Castro has an opportunity in front of him.

He came to Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent. Three of his teammates were drafted between the 2024 and 2025 drafts. If anything, a familiarity advantage could be had there.

Castro can currently be described as being on the outside looking in. Like Steelers’ running back Warren, though, his performance could fill a void. Between the history of former teammates and versatility, he has a legitimate chance to make the roster.

Yahya Black

Finally, one of those three teammates of Castro’s is a Steelers fifth-round pick in the 2025 Draft. Black is a massive human being and fits the mold of a Steelers defensive lineman.

Once drafted, the idea was he would take the place of nose tackle. However, Teryl Austin told the media after the selection that he can play along the line. He will absolutely have that opportunity to showcase it in preseason work.

Behind Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, and first-round pick Derrick Harmon, there isn’t a surefire pecking order. History indicates Steelers veterans like DeMarvin Leal, Dean Lowry, and Daniel Ekuale will get the first opportunity. Black, however, has plenty of opportunity to compete against these veterans for future roles.
