PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebackers T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig and cornerback James Pierre are trending toward missing the team’s Week 16 game against the Detroit Lions after missing their second straight practice at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Thursday.

Watt is still recovering from a partially collapsed lung, and made his first appearance at the team’s facility on Thursday, but has yet to return to practice action. Herbig replaced Watt in Monday’s win over the Miami Dolphins, but suffered a hamstring injury late in that game, and he’s now missed two straight practices as well.

Rookie Jack Sawyer, the newly re-signed Jeremiah Moon and practice squad member DeMarvin Leal are the team’s backup options at outside linebacker.

Pierre has now missed five straight practices after suffering a calf injury against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14. Asante Samuel Jr. appears to be in line to replace him for the second straight week.

Additionally, safety Jabrill Peppers missed Thursday’s practice with an illness. He had been a full participant on Wednesday.
