Behind the Steel Curtain
With Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ status very much up in the air for Sunday’s contest against the Chicago Bears, it could very well be Mason Rudolph making the start for Pittsburgh. Should it be Rudolph making the start, it seems like fans won’t be upset with seeing him under center.
Rudolph entered the game to begin the second half for Pittsburgh and was met with loud cheers. When asked about the ovation he received from the crowd, Rudolph made it clear he appreciated the fans’ support.
“I love playing here. This is where I was drafted. This is home. It was very special.”
The veteran has carved out a niche as the backup quarterback for the Steelers. After being drafted in the third round of the 2018 draft by the Steelers, Rudolph rarely saw the field and struggled early when he was called upon. Rudolph has spent five of his six NFL seasons in Pittsburgh and gained popularity among the Steelers’ fan base in 2023 after leading the Steelers to the playoffs following a miraculous late-season push.
Rudolph went 12 of 16 passing for 127 yards and one touchdown. He didn’t throw much downfield, but he did guide the Steelers to 10 points during a second half where the Steelers only possessed the ball twice, if you exclude the game-ending kneel down. Pittsburgh was buoyed by a strong defensive performance, which included two defensive scores on its way to a 34-12 victory.
The Steelers may need Rudolph’s services again soon, but it seems like you won’t get any pushback about him taking the field from Steelers fans.
