One former NFL Coach of the Year Award winner and Brian Schottenheimer of the Dallas Cowboys appear to be among the five NFL head coaches on the hot seat in 2025.
Seven NFL teams will have new head coaches entering 2025, and six HCs will be entering year two with their current clubs. Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers), John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens) and Andy Reid (Kansas City Chiefs) are the only active head coaches who’ve been with their teams for at least nine years.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes that five NFL head coaches are on the hot seat entering 2025: Dave Canales (Carolina Panthers), Brian Schottenheimer, Shane Steichen (Indianapolis Colts), Brian Daboll (New York Giants) and Mike McDaniel (Miami Dolphins).
Daboll won Coach of the Year honors as a rookie in 2022 after leading the Giants to a 9-7-1 record and a surprise Wild Card Round victory over the 13-win Minnesota Vikings. But the G-Men have gone just 9-25 since, making this a make-or-break year for the longtime New England Patriots’ assistant.
Steichen is 17-17 as Colts head coach through two seasons, and patience is wearing thin for a fanbase that has celebrated a single playoff win in 10 years (back in the 2018 Wild Card Round). McDaniel has zero playoff wins in three years, and Canales is under pressure to show he can lead Carolina in the right direction after a disappointing 5-12 record last year.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones faced immense criticism for promoting Schottenheimer to the HC role after parting ways with Mike McCarthy. Schottenheimer was Dallas’ offensive coordinator in 2023 and 2024, but McCarthy was the play-caller.
Jones is notoriously patient with his head coaches, but one losing season under Schottenheimer could be enough for the polarizing Dallas owner to make a change.
