The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, boat racing them by a score of 40-22. By beating the Chiefs in the Super Bow, the Eagles were able to do something no other team in the AFC was able to do this year.
The Eagles, too, have had a stranglehold over the AFC in recent years, as they’ve only lost one game to an AFC opponent in the last two seasons, and that’s when they lost to the New York Jets beat them in Week 6 of the 2023 season by a score of 20-14. It was the first loss of the Eagles on the season, dropping their record to 5-1, while the Jets improved to 3-3.
As you surely remember, Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in 2023, meaning he wasn’t the Jets starting quarterback that day. Rather, draft bust Zach Wilson, now a backup with the Denver Broncos, was the signal-caller for Gang Green, making him the only AFC QB to beat the Birds in the last two season. Any given Sunday, right?

Wilson certainly didn’t tear up any trees against the Eagles, as he completed 19 of 33 passes for 186, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. The Jets’ defense were the stars of the day, as they picked off Jalen Hurts — winner of this year’s Super Bowl MVP — three times. Running back Breece Hall also punched in the game-winning touchdown with about 1:45 left on the clock.

Next season, the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles will have matchups against the following AFC teams: Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders at home, and the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, and Buffalo Bills on the road. As Super Bowl champions, they’ll open the season with a Thursday Night Football matchup at home in Week 1.
Given the above list of opponents, it’s unlikely their Week 1 game will be against an AFC team, leaving the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and Los Angeles Rams as their potential Week 1 opponents.
The Giants, Cowboys, and Bears are expected to be below average, so count them out. The Rams seem to be moving on from Matthew Stafford, so they’ll likely be nixed, too, which leaves the Commanders and Lions as the most likely teams to travel to Philly for Week 1 next year.
