The Tush Push is on Life Support After Eagles Convert Four of Their Last 10 Attempts

In news that will please tush push haters like Joe Schad and Stan Verrett, the Eagles are 4-10 on their last ten shove efforts.

They’re converting at just 60% on the season, according to the handy tush push tracker:

The Birds were 0-2 in Washington on Saturday night, false starting on both. On the first effort, they delayed in snapping the ball and Fred Johnson jumped. On the second one, they got whistled for moving too early in what looked like a typical snap sequence that other NFL refs have not called.

That being said, they were 1-1 against Vegas, 1-1 against Dallas, and fumbled against the Bears. That was the play in which maybe the whistle should have been blown for stopped forward progress. And in the Detroit home game, they went 1-6 with two penalties and three stuffed runs.

More than anything, they seem hesitant when they get up to the line. They used to go up, get set, snap the ball, and plow it in. Now it’s indecisive and they’re jumpy as the refs pay closer attention to the line of scrimmage. There’s also the wildcard now of different crews blowing the play dead at different times. Put it all together and it’s just not effective like it used to be.

In fact, the league-wide conversion rate this season is 68.6%, which is 70 successful conversions on 102 attempts. There have only been nine total false starts and five belong to the Birds. The Bills, who voted to ban the play, are 11-14 and converting at 79%. The Seahawks also voted to ban the play, as did the Chargers, and those teams are 10 for 13 and 7 for 8, respectively.
