New Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen seemingly left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his former employer, high and dry in favor of their cross-state competitor. Coen initially turned down the Jaguars, according to the reports, and agreed to a deal to remain with the Bucs on a significantly improved contract.
However, when the Jaguars turned around and fired general manager Trent Baalke, Coen seemingly had a change of heart and accepted the Jacksonville head coaching job. Coen’s wife Ashley later broke the silence and explained the entire situation. But it still doesn’t seem to have sat well with the Tampa Bay organization or its fans.
Since leaving, Coen has asked to interview multiple members of the Buccaneers’ staff for improved positions with Jacksonville. But to this point, Tampa Bay has denied all of those interviews.

The Bucs already blocked the Jaguars from interviewing offensive line coach Kevin Carberry for a similar position, and now they’re seemingly do it again with a different coach. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Tampa Bay blocked the Jaguars from interviewing assistant offensive line coach Brian Picucci. Presumably this would have been for their offensive line coaching role.
Picucci and Coen have an extensive history over working together. He was the offensive line coach at UMass when Coen played quarterback there from 2004-200. The pair later teamed up as coaches at the University of Maine when Coen was the offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017. And Picucci eventually followed Coen to Kentucky in 2023 as a quality control coach when Coen was the coordinator before going to Tampa with one another.
So this is personal for Coen. But it also feels extremely personal for the Bucs. And so long as they’re operating within the league rules, there’s not really much Coen or the Jags can do about it.
