The Pittsburgh Steelers are trying to squeeze everything they can out of their aging core while also looking ahead to the future and seeing who will be able to make an impact on the next iteration of the Steelers. This offseason, they got even more clarity on who some of those players might be.
Cornerback Daylen Everette, a third-round pick out of Georgia, was very impressive at minicamp when he was called upon. Everette even got plenty of reps with the starting defense playing against the Pittsburgh starters on the other side and held his own against star receiver DK Metcalf at times, per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
“Everette, one of the Steelers’ three third-round draft picks, turned heads with a larger-than-expected role in minicamp, as cornerback Joey Porter Jr. limited his participation while hoping for a contract extension,” Pryor wrote. “The player out of Georgia held his own as he battled with wide receiver DK Metcalf and got his hands on several passes.”
Everette later talked about going up against Metcalf and relishing the challenge of trying to get better against such a physical specimen.
“[Metcalf] is a big physical guy, so going against someone like him, it can help me to guard anyone else,” Everette said, per Pryor. “I enjoy going against him because I know it’s helping me get better.”
Everette has great size for the position, but his production was lacking at times while at Georgia. That led to him falling down into the third round, where Pittsburgh was happy to scoop him up.
Despite that, Everette finished his four-year college career with five interceptions and 19 pass breakups, making him one of the most productive corners in the SEC. If he can bring that experience to the NFL, he will have the chance to make an impact for the Steelers as a rookie.
Joey Porter Jr. is the clear top dog at corner for the Steelers, but the second cornerback spot is viewed as a weakness. This offseason, Everette has emerged as a clear contender to take that spot this season.
