When comparing the New Orleans Saints with the rest of the NFL, they are the only team without a named starting quarterback. This makes sense given the battle being so close, but the team needs to make a decision soon. Many had hoped that it would be announced today in head coach Kellen Moore’s press conference, but alas, that was not the case, and we will have to wait a bit longer. According to Moore, the decision between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler is reaching the last stages and should become official in the coming days. When asked how close the Saints are to making this decision, Moore said:
In addition, this Wednesday is the team’s first practice since Saturday’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos. Moore was asked if there is a benefit to naming a starter by that practice, and this is what he said:
Yes, I know the quote is a bit short and to the point, but Moore would have gone into a bit more explanation if he felt the Saints could wait a bit longer. In addition, naming their QB by the first practice is necessary so the Saints can game plan the offense around either Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough. Each of these QBs brings something different to the offense, and the starters must build more chemistry with either one. We have already seen in preseason that these QBs, specifically Shough, have had some missed throws due to that chemistry not being established enough. This is a simple issue that will be fixed with more reps together in practice and in games, so with the clock ticking down, we will soon see this position battle come to a close.
