The Saints QB training camp rotation may be no more
Canal Street Chronicles Canal Street Chronicles

When a team has a QB competition involving three players vying for the starting spot, the coaching staff must create a schedule to assess each player’s strengths and weaknesses. The New Orleans Saints have done a really good job of doing this so far in training camp. Since day 1, the rotation has been Spencer Rattler first (with the first team), Tyler Shough next, and Jake Haener third. Besides some snap changes between whoever was with the second and third groups, this rotation was pretty consistent, and it made sense why. One of head coach Kellen Moore’s top jobs is to find the starting quarterback for the 2025 Saints season, and if that player is on the roster, a complete assessment must happen. This creates a need for an even rotation of the quarterbacks, which is why the Saints have not really strayed away from it… Well, except now.

On the 11th day of training camp, and their last day in Louisiana before the first preseason game, the Saints made a change and started Spencer Rattler with the first team on consecutive days. This could be New Orleans just getting Rattler ready to start in the first preseason game this year, but it may hint towards something much bigger.

Kellen Moore has stated many times that the coaching staff will take their time to name the starting quarterback, but they also understand the value of selecting sooner rather than later. The Saints will not waste time if one of these quarterbacks is just performing better than the others, and that has been Rattler. There is still time for Tyler Shough to bridge the gap, and that may happen in preseason, but right now, it looks like Rattler is in the lead, and it may be his job to lose.

Again, the Saints will not make a rash decision if they believe more assessment is needed, but they can start leaning towards Rattler. If the second-year QB continues to be placed with the first team in practice and outperforms his competition (Shough and Haener) in the Chargers game, a decision on the next starting quarterback of the New Orleans Saints may come as soon as next week.
