The Las Vegas Raiders are currently waiting for training camp to begin in late July to continue preparing for the 2026-27 season. With the club beginning its early development for quarterback Fernando Mendoza, it appears a potential breakout star in the wide receiver room is building chemistry with the team’s No. 1 overall pick.
Reports indicate that sixth-round pick Malik Benson stood out amongst the crowd in Las Vegas, according to Ryan McFadden of ESPN. The ex-Oregon Duck wideout is said to have become a top pass option for Mendoza during OTAs and minicamp, and considering the wide receiver room is wide open, Benson could have a chance to earn a prominent role for the Raiders.
“The Raiders drafted Benson in the sixth round with the belief that the former Oregon wideout could be a vertical threat who opens up the offense and makes explosive plays,” McFadden wrote. “He showcased that ability throughout OTAs and minicamp. He and quarterback Fernando Mendoza developed a strong connection during practices.
“Benson was Mendoza’s go-to target during team drills, especially in the middle of the field,” continued McFadden. “The competition at wide receiver is pretty much wide open, meaning Benson has a chance to create a role for himself in Year 1 if his production continues during training camp.”
Benson, who is 23 years old, played three seasons of college football with three different programs (Alabama, Florida State, Oregon). His lone year with the Ducks was easily his most productive, as the 6-foot-1 wideout recorded career highs in receptions (43), yards (719), and touchdowns (6) in 15 games played at Oregon.
Being a breakout candidate in Las Vegas is a good spot to be in heading into training camp. The No. 1 option in the passing game is a wide-open race, as the Raiders don’t have a guaranteed star in the wide receiver room. Malik Benson is contending for playing time with Jack Bech, Tre Tucker, Jalen Nailor, Dont’e Thornton Jr., and Dareke Young.
