Below, you will find two things that you’ve heard or seen over the last five to ten years regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over that time period, there has been one constant; Mike Tomlin. This is not a “Fire him!” type of piece but rather, it’s a “can we all finally admit to this” type of article.

Why Don’t We Throw Over the Middle?

Let’s start with a graphic from yesterday’s loss in Chicago and to be fair, this graphic could be from any QB in Pittsburgh since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

You’ll notice that there are no throws in the area of the circle or, ‘middle of the field.’ This is clearly a Mike Tomlin-driven thing. It’s kind of like that old football coach from high school who believes the forward pass to be communist or something. “There’s three things that can happen when you throw and two of them are bad!” Tomlin is basically preaching that he isn’t willing to risk throws over the middle – where they can be rich rewards for doing so – because that’s also where turnovers happen.

Why must this be a Mike Tomlin thing? Simply because there have been different QBs and different coordinators during this time span and not using the middle of the field remains status quo.

Communication Issues

You could have the top students at Northwestern or Syracuse’s School of Communications in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ secondary and you would still have problems. The question is why? Are the players we draft and sign in free agency just not catching on? Is the terminology too difficult for them?

To be fair, it doesn’t seem to be a ‘secondary only’ problem as Patrick Queen suggested yesterday.

Why must this be a Mike Tomlin thing? Because we’ve had numerous secondary coaches over the last decade and a few different coordinators too. We’ve had dozens of different players rotate in and out of the secondary yet the problems continue like a rash that just won’t go away.

I think you get the picture. This team is the same as last year and the one before that and the one before that and so on… And the one constant as to why nothing seems to change is Mike Tomlin. Sorry, but it’s true.
