NFL teams have begun carrying shooters of pickle juice to give to players struggling with cramps. A new report from The Athletic recently dove into the NFL’s use of the briny liquid.
According to the report, the last ten years has seen an increase of usage of pickle juice in the NFL, with teams carrying the liquid in two-ounce containers that are available on NFL sidelines and locker rooms.
The report lists multiple examples of NFL players turning to pickle juice to help with their cramps, such as Lamar Jackson after the Bills game, Rico Dowdle after Sunday’s gam against the Miami Dolphins, and Mac Jones against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football.
As for why pickle juice is an effective counter to cramps, the liquid is a proven excellent source of salt and potassium, which The Athletic says “targets nerves that cause cramping instead of the muscle itself.
“Nobody wants to drink pickle juice during games, so they usually drink Gatorade,” San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Evan Anderson said. “But if you cramp during the game? (Pickle juice is) going to get you back almost instantly.”
“It usually helps with very large cramps, too,” Atlanta Falcons star running back Bijan Robinson said. “So if you have a charley horse or full-body cramps, pickle juice is the answer.”
One area of the country that is unsurprisingly ahead of the curve when it comes to treating cramps with pickle juice is the SEC, as a tweet responding to The Athletic‘s story showed a tailgate serving Powerade with pickles in them.
“All along the Mississippi south of Memphis you will find Koolickles for sale on the counter of gas stations,” one tweeter noted.
I appreciate the NFL’s plight against cramping, but in college football world down south we have graduated to actual pickles in Powerade https://t.co/oHo1HLoYF2 pic.twitter.com/9bQtxpUqaB
