Reports of newly hired New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn instituting a team “bible study” went viral over the weekend. Glenn was hired as the Jets coach earlier this year after the midseason firing of Robert Saleh.

News of Aaron Glenn’s bible study began picking up steam after second-year New York Jets safety Jarius Monroe shared a picture of his bible worksheet to social media.

Given that the New York Jets have the longest active playoff drought among all of the four major American sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL), the jokes about Gang Green needing to resort to God practically wrote themselves.

“I’m usually for keeping religion and work completely separate, but I actually think the Jets need Jesus Christ himself to help fix them,” one Jets fan joked in a viral response to the story.

“The Jets are asking a lot of God,” another riffed.

“After that 5-12 season, a request for divine intervention may be in order,” a third cracked.

On a popular Jets Facebook group, however, a woman named Jessi Powell claims to have previously run a volunteer bible study for the Jets’ players and their families and that it is ‘nothing new.’

“They’ve had a volunteer Bible study for years. They also have a volunteer chapel as well. I ran the volunteer Bible study for the wives/significant others while my husband played. This is nothing new. Nothing is forced on the players or spouses. A lot of the guys love it and our ladies study sometimes turned more into just a weekly get together to talk/have coffee!” she wrote on Facebook.

Glenn certainly hasn’t wasted anytime putting his fingerprint on the culture of the Jets, beginning with his handling of divisive quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whom the Jets ultimately cut and replaced with Justin Fields. According to Rodgers, Glenn and the Jets brass had him fly cross-country only to tell him in a brief and blunt meeting that they were moving in a different direction.

What Glenn seems to understand — at least before he’s coached his first game as a head coach — is that the Jets have a rotten culture at its core; a rotten culture that’s existed in ebbs and flows over the years but was exasperated in recent seasons under Aaron Rodgers. Before he gets the team to think and play different, he needs to get them to feel different first, and all of the changes he’s implementing seem geared toward that.
