The Jets offense found new heights in week 1

I’ve always thought it pretty funny that a team named after airplanes was so inept on offense in a passing league.

This week though? Well this week the New York Jets scored 30+ points… and it sure doesn’t look like a fluke, at least if we look at PFF’s success rate metric.

For context, PFF defines it’s success rate metric as follows:

A team’s Success Rate is another common play-by-play efficiency metric, indicative of both a team’s ability, and a coaching staff’s competence. The success of each play is contextualized based on down and distance, and can be attributed to both offense and defense. Further, identical plays might not be graded in a similar fashion. For instance, a five-yard carry on 1st-and-10 would be deemed a success, whereas a five-yard carry on 3rd-and-10 would be a failure.

The context matters, and success rate aims to track how often each offense remains on track. When a team’s success rate significantly deviates from its results, regression should be expected — and such regression should provide opportunity for sports bettors.

And based on that metric, the Jets were the best offense in football in week 1 as they had the highest success rate in the sport. This suggests that your eyes were indeed correct and the Jets basically moved the ball at will all day long.

Maybe you’re someone who prefers the grades though. Good news, the Jets graded out as well as anyone did on the aggregate. If you’re looking for a reason to think that this regime is different then this is about as good an early sign as it gets.
