The New York Jets are turning to one of their former general managers to help them fire their new general manager. According to reports, the organization has hired The 33rd Team, a firm founded by former GM Mike Tannenbaum, to help assist with the search for a new general manager.

This offseason, the Jets will be replacing general manager Joe Douglas, who was hired in 2019 and fired earlier this season, and head coach Robert Saleh, who was sacked after Week 5. The Jets have gone 1-5 since Saleh was fired, which was a decision unilaterally made by Woody Johnson.

Tannenbaum, 55 years old, was the general manager for the Jets from 2006 to 2012 and the executive vice president of football operaitons for the Miami Dolphins from 2015 to 2018. Tannenbaum also currently serves as an analyst for ESPN, where his hypothetical trade ideas will get routinely clowned on by his Get Up! co-panelists.

“The Jets are hiring The 33rd Team, which was founded by former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, to assist in their search for a new GM and head coach, per source. Tannenbaum and former Vikings GM Rick Spielman will be the primary representatives of The 33rd Team,” reported Jets beat writer Brian Costello of the New York Post.

Over the weekend, The Athletic reporter Dianna Russini, who has been plugged into the Jets’ implosion all season, reported that a name to keep an eye on for their open head coaching role is another name from the franchise’s past, former head coach Eric Mangini, who coached Gang Green in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

One of the issues the Jets face in hiring a new regime, according to reports, is that the word is out on owner Woody Johnson being an overbearing and ineffective boss with a penchant for meddling in things he knows little to nothing about — finding a promising candidate willing to work under those conditions is no small feat.
