When the Los Angeles Rams decided to add Jared Verse to their trade offer, acquiring Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns became a more realistic possibility. But to general manager Les Snead, it was a gif that helped seal the deal.

When discussing the trade with Browns GM Andrew Berry, Snead sent a gif of Hulk Hogan and The Rock staring each other down. He had Berry laughing and ultimately was able to secure the trade, via Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

“Two months and four days into the negotiation, finally, Les Snead punched the message into his iPhone: “Alright, send the trade papers over.” And the Rams’ GM then searched for a GIF—landing on Hulk Hogan and The Rock, locked in a staredown—to send to his counterpart, Browns GM Andrew Berry,” Breer wrote.

“Me and you negotiating the kickbacks,” Snead added, via text.

“Berry responded with a crying-laughing emoji, as he literally laughed out loud in his office,” Breer concluded.

While Snead was making jokes, talking through the Garrett trade was no laughing matter. The pass rusher had become the face of the Browns and just recent broke the NFL single-season record for sacks. For months, Cleveland had shown no intention of trading him away.

But Snead and the Rams stayed in pursuit. They’re all-in on winning the Super Bowl and were willing to do whatever it took. When Cleveland finally saw eye-to-eye with Los Angeles’ offer, the shocking trade came to fruition.

Snead’s gif while funny on the surface, started a domino effect to where Los Angeles is now. Berry was well aware the Rams weren’t going to back down. Eventually, Snead got his guy.
