Any and all conversations regarding the Tennessee Titans begin and end with talk about Cam Ward. The 2025 first overall pick was highly touted coming out of Miami. He had a solid rookie season last year, but his 3,169 yards and 15 touchdown passes left a lot to be desired, too.
Tet McMillan won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors over Ward, and the Miami product was only able to lead his team to a three-win season. Even so, Ward’s potential is vast, and expectations are still sky high for his NFL future. However, his sophomore campaign has already gotten off to a rocky start. While fans shouldn’t worry too much about player performances during organized team activities, Ward’s struggles in OTAs got the Titans community talking. So, will Ward re-instill optimism during mandatory minicamp, or will fans have to wait until the regular season?
Ward is a young and still-developing quarterback. Early career struggles are to be expected. While fans weren’t in person to witness it, reports suggested that the second-year quarterback had his fair share of miscues during OTAs. Ward reportedly struggled with accuracy, had numerous interceptions, and had questionable technique, including when it comes to footwork and timing.
Everybody would love for Ward to already be tearing defenses apart, especially in practice, as the Titans desperately need their big-time draft investment to turn into a superstar. Ward’s struggles are not the end of the world, though. Robert Saleh is in his first year as the Titans’ coach, and Brian Daboll has taken over as the team’s new offensive coordinator. That means that the quarterback is learning a new system yet again, and growing pains are inevitable during that process.
While it is best that Ward figures out the kinks now and not during the regular season, he should still be performing better than he has been. The Titans improved one of the worst receiving corps in the league with the draft selection of Carnell Tate and the signing of Wan’Dale Robinson. The offensive line has been reinforced with the additions of Austin Schlottman and Cordell Volson, too.
Ward also has the raw traits to thrive in a practice setting when defensive players aren’t hunting him down. The hope is that he will be much improved come mandatory minicamp. Gaining positive momentum and showing signs of true development will be vital toward having a successful sophomore campaign.
