Actually, this isn’t the backup plan anyone had in mind. Shedeur Sanders, the flashy quarterback with the famous last name and even flashier wristwear, just saw his name pop up in a place no one expected, the CFL negotiation list.
That’s right. While the Cleveland Browns rookie gears up for his first NFL training camp, chatter is heating up about what his football future might look like if things go sideways in the States.
Sanders, drafted 144th overall by the Browns, landed in a jam-packed quarterback room with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and rookie Dillon Gabriel. He hasn’t had as many reps as his teammates so far, but his mindset remains focused and mature.
“I got time to actually be able to really have a great understanding, and whenever it’s time for me to play, then it’s time for me to play,” Shedeur Sanders told reporters at minicamp. But just in case? There might be another option waiting, north of the border.
On Friday, CFL analyst Marshall Ferguson dropped the nugget that Sanders is officially on a CFL negotiation list, a common practice for teams to claim potential rights to players. But this isn’t just any player.
“This is THE name on the list if you’re going for cartoonishly loud and fun name recognition,” Ferguson wrote. He also hinted at the idea of Shedeur in Toronto, joking, “I can’t yet, but after falling all the way to the fifth round of the NFL Draft this year, never say never.”

The internet did what it always does, exploded with opinions.
“Shedeur Sanders to the CFL would be hilarious marketing,” one fan wrote.

Another chimed in, “There’s no way a Sanders will play in the CFL lol. But I understand the procedure for that league.”

Some saw the irony. “It would be a kinda fun full circle moment if he sort of mimics his college career in the pros. Start off facing lesser competition to then transition to facing better opponents,” said a fan on X.

Others weren’t having it. “Shameless using Shedeur’s name for clicks,” one user snapped.
