Quarterback Jacoby Brissett arrived at mandatory minicamp with the Arizona Cardinals after holding out throughout most of the offseason. He seemingly wants a new deal with the organization, and new reports reveal exactly what Brissett wants from the franchise.

When Brissett initially signed a two-year, $12.5 million contract with the Cardinals last season, he was brought in to be the backup behind Kyler Murray. However, the 10-year veteran stepped in and played 14 games, starting in 12, and is now in line to be the starter for next season.

Former NFL defensive back Devin McCourty explained the situation during the latest episode of “PFT Live.” McCourty claimed that Brissett simply wants to be compensated as a starter now that it’s his clear role. Especially considering the Cardinals didn’t acquire a clear upgrade this offseason at the quarterback position.

“When I saw all the headlines, ‘Jacoby Brissett wants starter money,’ it’s like, what does that mean?” pondered McCourty… “Every time I’ve talked to [Brissett], that’s been his biggest thing. ‘No, I just don’t think if I’m going to start that the backup should have more guaranteed money on his contract than I do.’ He said last year, ‘My contract did not show what I went out there and did.’

“So, why would I sign up knowing that the team didn’t do anything different other than bring in another career backup in Gardner Minshew and then draft [Carson] Beck?” claimed McCourty. “But he’s like, ‘I know if I go out there and play this year, I easily could end up the starter again.’ Last year, he wasn’t supposed to be the starter, and then he ended up playing, and he played well.”

Based on Devin McCourty’s comments, it doesn’t sound like Brissett is seeking a contract that pays him like one of the elite quarterbacks in the league. Instead, it appears he just wants to be compensated fairly for playing the starting quarterback role.

Jacoby Brissett, who is 33 years old, ended last season with a career year, finishing with 3,366 passing yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 64.9% of his pass attempts, all of which are career highs.
