Player Overview

Trey Amos was not only a three-star recruit out of Louisiana that helped his high school team win the state championship, he also played basketball and was a champion long jumper. Despite an offer from Tennessee, Amos began a winding college career at Louisiana-Lafayette. Amos spent three years with the Ragin’ Cajuns resulting in modest production. Looking to prove himself against the best in college football, Amos entered the transfer portal and ended up at Alabama. Amos only started one game but played in each game for the Crimson Tide’s defense. After Nick Saban retired, Amos entered the portal again, this time going to Ole Miss. He put together his most productive season yet for the Rebels, earning a reputation as their shutdown corner and first-team All-SEC honors.

Strengths

  • Great build with long arms
  • In press man, strong punch to disrupt route timing
  • Patient player that doesn’t panic and trusts his keys
  • Quick recognition in off man and zone coverages
  • Uses length to play through hands of receivers
  • Good play strength and aggressive tackler

Weaknesses

  • Questionable long speed
  • Hip tightness noticeable during transitions in coverage
  • False steps and wasted movements can be exploited
  • Could draw flags for how physical he is in coverage

Let’s See His Work

How He Fits on the Commanders

With Benjamin St-Juste, Noah Igbinoghene, and Michael Davis becoming free agents, the Commanders will need to add cornerbacks this offseason. It is likely they will find a free agent or two that can improve the position group, but they should still consider the draft for talent at the position to go along with Marshon Lattimore and Mikey Sainristil.

Trey Amos has the build and temperament of an NFL corner and is versatile enough to play in a variety of coverage schemes. His physicality should help a team in both run and pass defense. If the team finds a starting outside corner in free agency, Amos can be young, inexpensive depth as he gains experience. If he has to start right away, I think Amos will experience growing pains on the way to eventually being CB2 for the team.
