The Colts get a chance to win on two fronts this coming Sunday. A win over the Chiefs, likely keeps KC out of the tourney that might as well be named for them over the last 7 years. No one will have stuck a fork in them, but it would put them at 5 – 6, needing a 5 game winning streak to have any shot. Secondly, it would allow us to continue to control our own destiny as far as the #1 seed is concerned. We wouldn’t technically overtake the Pats, unless they happen to find a way to lose to Bengals, but we do hold a tie-breaker advantage and do control our own destiny.

Let me preface this by saying that I in no way anticipate the Colts to play poorly on Sunday. I think they will come up big in their first “all eyes” game of the season. At least I hope so, since you will have to win a few of those to make a deep run. I also hope that they are the national game in my area at 1:00. The Panthers play on Monday night, so expect to get to watch them live. In all honesty, I expect a coming out party.

However, we have been excited in the final two months in the recent past, only to watch our chances take a hit by, as the title implies, by “Laying an egg”. Many will find no shame in losing to the AFC’s representative to the Super Bowl for 5 of the last 6 years, especially with the game at their place. Vegas says that they are a 3 – 3 1/2 point favorite, which would be hard to argue. For me, laying an egg is not playing your best, in a game that requires you to do so. I also deem laying an egg as not being prepared and I put that on the coach.

Shane has shown a tendency this year to keep the pedal down when an opponent is on the ropes and that is how this game needs to be approached. Make no mistake, the Chiefs are on the ropes. If we can gain a lead, Shane needs to call plays as though no lead is safe, until it is. No prevent on D, no vanilla on offense. Throw everything at them and give the rest of the league all of the looks that they will need to prepare for, including seeing designed runs for DJ and some no huddle.

I’m hoping to see us come out with the attitude that the Chiefs have something that we want and that we are there to take it from them. A win in their place (convincing or not) puts the rest of the league on notice and I think propels them to being the favorite in their remaining games. That is my hope, but at minimum, I do not want to see us lay that egg. The egg is gut punching and...
