The Las Vegas Raiders fired Chip Kelly as their offensive coordinator just 11 games into his tenure with the team. According to reports, minority owner Tom Brady was a “big advocate” for Kelly.

While it had been a number of years since Chip Kelly had success at the NFL level (2014 with the Philadelphia Eagles, when he went 10-6 for the second consecutive season), the Las Vegas Raiders hired him to be the team’s offensive coordinator anyway. Quarterbacks coach Greg Olson has since taken over as the team’s OC.

After just 11 games, Las Vegas has made a mea culpa, however, as they fired Kelly following the team’s pathetic loss at home to the Cleveland Browns over the weekend, who were quarterback by rookie signal-caller Desheur Sanders in his first-ever start.

Las Vegas Raiders minority owner Tom Brady was reportedly a “big advocate” in bringing recently-fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly to the team

According to The Athletic, the Kelly fiasco was largely spurred on by Tom Brady as the legendary NFL quarterback was a “big advocate” for bringing him to the team. Kelly had last served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Ohio State in 2024.

“I’m told Tom Brady was a big advocate for bringing in Chip Kelly to run the Raiders’ offense, and has shared with some people close to him his disappointment in the team’s overall performance. His frustrations go beyond the offense, too,” reported Dianna Russini for The Athletic.

After becoming one of the hottest names in football in the late 2010s during his time as the University of Oregon head coach, Kelly coached the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013 to 2015, the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, and UCLA from 2018 to 2023.

The Raiders have been putrid on offense this year, ranking 30th in yards per game and 31st in points per game.

The play of quarterback Geno Smith, whom the Raiders signed to a two-year, $75 million deal after trading a third round NFL Draft pick for him, certainly hasn’t helped, either.

Through the first 12 weeks of the NFL season, Smith has completed 66.6% of his passes for 2,367 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
