The Kansas City Chiefs offense was not particularly good this year, despite their fantastic 15-2 regular season record. They never really figured it out all season long, and it looked to be a real weakness heading into the posteason.

That is, until they absolutely needed the offense to come through. For the first time in the team’s 19 games all season, the Chiefs offense eclipsed the 30-point mark just when they needed it the most to beat the Bills and advance to their third-straight Super Bowl, 32-29.

At this point, Kansas City stepping up when they need to the most seems inevitable thing in all of sports. That’s exactly what the offense did today.

Kansas City scored just 23.2 points per game in the regular season, 12th-best in the NFL. That’s fine if you’re any old team. But, they have Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, Andy Reid calling plays, and Travis Kelce, among others catching passes. The offense may not be as good on paper as some other teams, but given the fundamentals and solid offensive line, you’d think they would’ve been better.

They struggled against the Texans in the AFC Divisional Round, too. They had just 212 total yards in the 23-14 win, taking advantage of good field position and some turnovers.

That wasn’t going to cut it on Sunday against the Bills. Naturally, they stepped it up. They had 341 yards of total offense, a fantastic 26 first downs, and only punted twice. In fact, they only finished five points without points. One was a kneeldown at the end of the first half, one was a fumble while the team was on the move to go up 14-3, and then one was the game-clinching drive to end the game that saw Kansas City get two first downs before kneeling the game out.

And, for the first time all season, they eclipsed the 30-point mark. They did it with no help from turnovers, as the Bills didn’t have any. Instead, it was a virtuoso performance from Patrick Mahomes. He was 18/26 for 245 yards and a score and ran for 43 yards on 11 carries with another two scores. Buffalo did a great job against Travis Kelce, but other Chiefs made plays. Guys like JuJu Smith-Schuster, who had been ineffective all year, stepped up. Xavier Worthy was terrific, too. It was Kansas City football. those who were called on made the plays when they needed to.

Philadelphia is going to score in the Super Bowl in two weeks. The Chiefs offense will need to come to play again. If the past tells us anything, they will be up to the challenge.
