In the Canadian Football League, teams are allowed to add up to 45 players to their “negotiation list,” essentially their way to be able to call dibs on a player in that league. Who is eligible to make these lists? Pretty much anyone who isn’t signed to a CFL contract.
To paint a picture of how wide the scope is, let’s look at the quarterback market. Here are four quarterbacks in very different situations, all of whom are on CFL negotiation lists: Trey Lance, a veteran former first-round pick, Shedeur Sanders, a Day 3 rookie, Alex McGough, a UFL quarterback, and Diego Pavia, who is still playing college football in the SEC.
So, yeah, again, pretty much any player isn’t under contract in the CFL. The only catch is that teams can only have 45 players on their negotiation list, so space is limited.
The other thing is that until Wednesday, the CFL’s negotiation list has been secretive. Now, for the first time ever, the negotiation list, which will be updated every 24 hours like the NFL’s transaction wire, is public.
Two active Green Bay Packers are on CFL negotiation lists. Undrafted rookie free agent Brank Banks, a former Rice offensive lineman, and cornerback Gregory Junior, originally a 2022 sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, are on the negotiation list of the Hamilton Tigercats.
There are 17 former Packers on CFL negotiation lists, by my count, but only the Tigercats have players on their list who are under contract with Green Bay at the moment. Here are the former Packers whose names made the negotiation list:
