Rodgers has yet to make a decision about his future
Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has not made a decision about his future, in part because the Minnesota Vikings won’t completely close the door on adding him to their roster eventually. If you’ve been following the story this offseason, Rodgers was vetted by the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers as a potential starting quarterback following his release from the New York Jets. Unfortunately for those two teams, Rodgers apparently wanted to be the Vikings' signal caller.
While Minnesota is riding it out with second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who they took in the first round last season before he had several surgeries to fix a preseason meniscus injury, Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah simply won’t come out and tell Rodgers they’re moving on completely.
In his press conference this week, Adofo-Mensah mentioned how tight Rodgers is with Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell, that he can’t say that Rodgers 100 percent won’t join the team at some point and that the team is prepared to understand all of their options.
The Giants eventually gave up on the Rodgers waiting game, electing to sign quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson, ending any chance that the former four-time MVP would join the team in 2025. And then there was one: the Steelers.
As Pittsburgh veteran defensive lineman Cam Heyward put it so eloquently: Either Rodgers wants to be a Steeler or not. It’s that simple.
Apparently, Rodgers believes he’s better than that opportunity. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who spoke with ESPN Milwaukee on Wednesday, Rodgers is legitimately considering retirement over signing a deal with the Steelers.
So, where will Rodgers play in 2025? At this point, something would need to change with the quarterback market. It seems like he would have played for the Vikings, who didn’t want to give up on McCarthy, but not the Giants or the Steelers. Currently, the Steelers are the only team set to make him a starter in 2025. It’s possible that Rodgers could linger as a free agent going into the regular season, hoping to pounce on an opportunity with a contender whose quarterback drops with an early-season or even preseason injury. The Rodgers drama keeps chugging along. It might never end.
