The San Francisco 49ers announced their captains before the team travels to Seattle for their Week 1 clash. 2024 saw the 49ers enter the season with eight captains, and 2025 will be no different, aside from the addition of a new member to the group. Christian McCaffrey, Kyle Juszczyk, George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Trent Williams, Brock Purdy, Fred Warner, and newcomer Deommodore Lenoir will lead the team in 2025.
The core group was never in question, but Lenoir’s ascension to the captain role is well-earned, given his embodiment of the 49ers’ defensive mindset as a cornerback. Essentially, the team swapped Deebo Samuel for Lenoir as a captain.
There is no doubt about the 49ers’ high-end talent, but 2025 is the year the captains will need to do the heavy lifting for a roster with so much new and young talent. The 2025 49ers will not advance far if their captain group either misses time or underperforms on the season.
Bosa will need to anchor the defensive line and come up with a DPOY-type season. Warner is the stability on the second level, and Lenoir is the clear-cut number one cornerback with a mean streak to his game. The rookies on the defensive line and secondary will look to their captains for guidance.
On offense, the newly extended Purdy and Kittle will need to continue their three-year hot streak as the 49ers receivers round back into shape and get healthy. With McCaffrey back in the fold, the 49ers’ red zone issues may be solved in 2024. Purdy refers to Williams as his “security blanket,” and the future Hall of Famer will watch the franchise QB’s blind side.
Juszczyk’s contributions to the offense go far beyond the box score, as the angles created with his run blocking and ability to create mismatches and identify man and zone coverages for Purdy.
All in all, there are no real surprises with the selection of captains; Lenoir’s selection is well-deserved, as he will lead the future 49ers into the next chapter of the Kyle Shanahan/John Lynch era.
