The New Orleans Saints are an absolutely NFL team. Through Week 12, they sit at 2-9, in last place in the NFC South and in a tie for the third-worst record in the NFL.
They can’t block. They can’t stop anybody, and most importantly, it doesn’t appear that they have any idea what there future looks like at the quarterback position.
Despite all of these things, the Saints and general manager Mickey Loomis, who most fans believe has long overstayed his welcome, decided to make things even worse this week by bringing in disgraced kicker Justin Tucker for a tryout.
For those unfamiliar, Tucker was long-considered the top kicker in the entire NFL. In 13 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, he made seven Pro Bowls, was named first-team All-Pro five times, and sits first in field goal percentage among kickers with at least 10 years in the league at 89.1 percent.
But in 2024, Tucker’s play fell off a cliff. He hit just 22-of-30 field goal attempts, for a 73.3 percentage, and also missed a pair of extra points.
To make matters worse, shortly after the season ended, Tucker was accused of a sexual harassment scandal involving several massage therapists throughout the Baltimore area. More than 20 massage therapists have accused Tucker of misconduct, leading to a 10-game suspension from the NFL.
The Baltimore Ravens released Tucker in May, but made no mention of allegations.
Now, with his suspension up, New Orleans is set to bring in Tucker (as well as Cade York) for a tryout, according to Ian Rapoport.
Now, the Saints are just 18-of-26 (69.2 percent) on field goal attempts this season, which ranks 25th in the NFL.
But bringing in Tucker for a tryout would be controversial in its own right, given the allegations against him. It makes even less sense for New Orleans the more you think about it.
For one, Tucker was just plain bad last season. Do you really want to add a bad kicker who also comes with a ton of baggage?
Additionally, the Saints are AWFUL. Why do you want to add any controversy to the mix? For what benefit? To maybe win one more game and hurt the draft stock, you should desperately be trying to improve?
Everybody knows how the NFL (and sports as a whole, really) works. There is no level of shame that triumphs over winning. But New Orleans isn’t winning with or without Tucker. And they really shouldn’t even be trying to do so!
This move is such an own goal in the most pathetic way imaginable, and I feel for Saints fans who just want their organization to stop being a colossal embarrassment.
