You don’t usually need court permission to watch your kid play football. But when your son is Patrick Mahomes and you’re on probation for a DWI? Yeah, things are different.
Patrick Mahomes Sr. just got a green light from a Texas judge to leave the state so he can watch his son suit up for the Chiefs’ preseason opener on August 9 against the Arizona Cardinals. According to court records reviewed by TMZ Sports, he made the official request on July 17 and got the all-clear five days later.
The trip takes him from August 8 to August 10, with a stay in a Glendale-area hotel. Mahomes Sr. agreed to follow all the terms of his probation while away, including submitting to a drug test when he returns to Texas on August 11.
This isn’t the first time Mahomes Sr. has had to go through the courts to leave the state. He’s currently serving probation after a DWI arrest earlier this year and must get court approval before traveling. The former MLB pitcher has already secured permission for a few trips, including one to an autograph signing event in Minnesota and another for his son’s charity golf tournament in Las Vegas.
The court has signed off each time, and so far, Mahomes Sr. has kept his end of the deal.
While it might seem like a hassle, it’s a necessary part of the plea agreement he reached with prosecutors. Smith County officials are clearly willing to work with him, as long as he follows the rules. That includes detailed itineraries, hotel confirmations, and testing upon return.
The upcoming game in Glendale marks the start of what could be a long season for the Chiefs, with potentially over 20 games across the country. If Kansas City does what Kansas City does, make another Super Bowl run, expect Mahomes Sr. to be in the courtroom plenty.
No word yet if he’ll request permission to attend every game, but with his son headlining one of the NFL’s most dominant teams, it wouldn’t be surprising.
For now, he’s good to go for August 9. And you can bet he’ll be in the stands, proud dad hat on, cheering from the sidelines, legally this time.
