So stop me if you’ve heard this one. After going out in the divisional round of last year’s playoffs, the Houston Texans stocked up on potential wide receiver targets in free agency and the draft. Meaning that with the preseason in full swing, the Texans have a huge glut of potentially high-impact receivers that they have to sort through before their week 1 tilt against the Los Angeles Rams.
John Metchie was expected to build upon the flashes of brilliance he’s shown on the field, but hasn’t been able to make himself stand out among the rest of the WR corps. As of this writing, the Texans’ WR room is one player close to figuring out the final roster.
Metchie, in Saturday’s game, only registered a single catch for eight yards. With Higgins and Noel showing promise, Xavier Hutchinson being a lower draft pick (and thus less expensive), and trades/FA acquisitions expected to be more regular contributors than Metchie, it made sense to move Metchie to the Eagles.
In turn, the Texans will be getting a receiving tight end option who is expected to fill Brevin Jordan’s spot in the TE room, who is out for the season having torn his ACL in training camp.
The late picks are essentially the picks that were traded in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade, so both teams get back their original day three picks. Life’s funny like that.
Does this trade move the needle much? Probably not. Bryant is a potential red zone target for Stroud, but being buried behind Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover on the TE depth chart doesn’t help matters for him. But depth in a much thinner area is better than having a potentially good WR languishing in limbo for another season.
