The Houston Texans have activated former Penn State safety Jaylen Reed from their injured reserve list for Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced. Reed is expected to back up starting strong safety Myles Bryant.

Reed, a rookie sixth-round pick, landed on injured reserve with a forearm injury on Dec. 6. While that could’ve brought his rookie season to an untimely end, Reed returned to practice on Jan. 8, giving him a chance to make his NFL playoff debut.

The 6-foot, 211-pound Reed began the season on the sideline owing to an offseason knee injury but still managed to make the Texans’ 53-man roster when he returned, no small feat for a day three draft pick. He’s appeared in seven games this season, starting one, and amassed 14 tackles (nine solo) along with a fumble recovery.

A starter at Penn State during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Reed played in all four years he spent in Happy Valley, racking up 181 tackles (110 solo), 12.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and five interceptions as a steady all-around playmaker.

To make room for Reed, the Texans waived defensive end Darrell Taylor. Houston also elevated defensive tackle Leki Fotu from the practice squad for Monday night’s game.
