Terry Bradshaw shocked football fans this week when he claimed Otto Graham is the greatest NFL quarterback of all time, and not Tom Brady. Does he have a legitimate argument?

“I always hear people say, ‘Tom Brady’s the greatest quarterback to ever play.’ Okay, is he really? Otto Graham may be the greatest quarterback to ever play,” Terry Bradshaw said during an appearance on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast.

“How many titles did Otto win? Look it up. And Tom lost three. I was 4-0. Montana was 4-0. Tom was 7-3. Seven minus three is four. Four, four, four. That’s kind of the way I look at it. People are something else. We always want to know who was the best, don’t we?”

All right, Terry. Let’s do that. Let’s look it up.

Otto Graham vs. Tom Brady: Who is the GOAT quarterback?

Playing well before the Super Bowl era, in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and the National Football League, Otto Graham won seven championships and lost three. As Bradshaw said, “Seven minus three is four.” Graham also played in football leagues that had anywhere from eight to 13 teams during his career. Graham’s 17-game averages over his 10-year pro football career are 3,182 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions per season. During his six years in the NFL, he went 57-13-1 as a starting quarterback in the regular season (105-17-4 including his time in the AAFC). He also had 44 touchdowns on the ground, played defense, and returned punts.

Tom Brady, on the other hand, won seven titles and lost three Super Bowls in an era when there were 31 and 32 teams in the NFL. Brady’s 17-game averages over his 23-year career are 4,527 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions per season. During his career, he went 251-82 in the regular season.

So, is Otto Graham really the greatest quarterback of all-time? Terry Bradshaw kind of undermines his own argument.

“I’ve never had anyone walk up to me and say, ‘Hey Terry, how many yards did you throw for? How many touchdown passes you got?’ Not one. Not one,” Bradshaw added. “But boy, I’ve had a million of them go, ‘Hey man, where’s your rings?’ So that kind of tells me that’s where the focus should be.”
