The Patriots’ defensive coordinator was absent for most of the offseason following a medical emergency.
The start of training camp on Wednesday marked the New England Patriots’ return to the Gillette Stadium practice fields after a five-week summer break. It also marked the return of defensive coordinator Terrell Williams following his multi-month absence.
Williams, who originally joined the team alongside new head coach Mike Vrabel in January, spent a majority of the offseason away after suffering what he described as a “life-changing” medical emergency. The 51-year-old remained in Detroit during his recovery, coaching his unit via video calls and remote instructions.
Recently, however, Williams made his comeback. On Wednesday, he was on the field alongside New England’s defense and other members of the coaching staff.
“It’s good to see him,” said defensive tackle Milton Williams. “That was a hard thing he had to deal with. You never know if you’re going to be able to make it back from something like that. It’s good to see him out here. Definitely good to see him out here, calling plays, and just getting back with the groove of things.”
Williams’ medical issue developed while on a break during the Patriots’ early offseason preparation. In May, ahead of the team’s rookie minicamp, Mike Vrabel made the news of the temporary and unexpected departure public without disclosing what condition his longtime assistant coach was dealing with.
Almost three months after that announcement, Williams has been cleared to return to Foxborough. The Patriots’ defense, unsurprisingly, is quite happy to see him back.
“It means everything,” said linebacker Robert Spillane. “A great defensive mind. A guy who has been in this league a long time. Has a lot of wisdom. Has a lot of understanding. His message is effort and finishing every play, so we’re just going to continue to keep working on that.”
“Just a smart dude,” added Williams. “I know he always coached the D-line, so he always got a little extra s—t-talking when it comes to us. But it’s fun to have a guy like that, who’s been around for a long time, coached a lot of great players. Just to pick his brain and see what you can add to your game from some of the legends he has coached. It’s good to have him.”
