Tennessee Titans Fire Head Coach Brian Callahan After Losing to Raiders

The Tennessee Titans tried to be patient with young head coach Brian Callahan. They really did.

Yet, after witnessing the Titans get what felt like blown out by the Las Vegas Raiders 20-10 on Sunday, that was the final straw that broke Callahan’s back.

According to several sources, including NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Titans have fired coach Callahan after a 1-5 start to the season. Callahan ends his Titans tenure with a ghastly 4-19 record after just 23 games.

Some would certainly argue that the Titans never should have hired Callahan away from his position as the Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive coordinator in the first place, especially considering they parted with Mike Vrabel to do so. Well, now Vrabel’s New England Patriots look like they’re tracking to reach the playoffs for the first time since they kicked Bill Belichick out of Beantown.

As for the Titans? The priority should still center around No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward‘s development. Of course, that’s what coach Callahan was expected to do, especially considering he had previous experience helping mold top pick Joe Burrow.

Yet, the Titans clearly weren’t happy with the lack of progress they’ve seen under Callahan’s guidance. General manager Mike Borgonzi is now tasked with finding the head coach of the Titans. We’re guessing they won’t be calling Jeff Fisher back into action. Being that he’s tied for the NFL lead with 165 losses, keeping Fisher away from Tennessee shouldn’t be too difficult.

Meanwhile, the Titans hope Ward starts showing signs of progress. If not, finding a new head coach willing to take on the project of developing Ward will be a must. Yet, since coaches and general managers typically try to pick their own QB, the Titans could have a tough task ahead.
