Ted’s Talk: Seahawks showcase Kubiak offense in emphatic win over Chiefs
Field Gulls Field Gulls

Old-school football is back!

For preseason game number two at least, as the Seattle Seahawks ran roughshod over the Kansas City Chiefs on a rainy night at Lumen Field. Seattle won handily 33-16, but even that score doesn’t indicate the dominance displayed by the Seahawks. Despite being penalized twice as much as Kansas City, Seattle gained 321 more yards, held a 29-9 advantage in first downs, and nearly doubled the Chiefs in time of possession.

Those kinds of statistics don’t happen by accident. Seattle’s defense was expected to be good, and they held up their end of the bargain. The Seahawks offense was deadly efficient against the Chiefs, no matter who lined up behind them. Klint Kubiak’s system looked like a well oiled machine, and he seemed to have an answer for everything. There will be bumps in the road, but his offense looks so much more professional than what was in place last year, it’s mind boggling. I can’t wait to see it in action when the regular season starts.

Seahawks Droppings

  • The offensive line paved the way for their running backs all night, giving them plenty of space to maneuver and find a hole. 268 rushing yards, are you kidding me?? It wasn’t just the starters either, considering there were four running backs with 45 or more rushing yards and each of them had an explosive rush of 15+ yards. This is exactly the type of offense Mike Macdonald envisions when he talks about being a team that no one wants to play against. It’s completely demoralizing when your defense gets the ball run down their throat every play and can’t do anything about it. But, when it’s your team that’s able to move the ball on the ground like that? Lovely.
  • Dareke Young may have locked up a roster spot. The other locks to me are Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, Tory Horton, and Jake Bobo – more on him in a minute. With the addition of a fullback in Kubiak’s offense – more on him in a minute, too – and the likelihood of keeping 4 TEs, the Seahawks may only keep five WRs this season. Young has always been a fantastic special teams player, but showed more as a WR in last night’s game than he has in the past. If the choice is between Young and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, give me the guy who contributes on special teams.
  • More Bobo. No, seriously, I love that guy. He’s another special teams mainstay, but he’s also a redzone weapon. Bobo is never going to be a 1,000 yard receiver, but he’s a good blocker with sure hands and isn’t afraid to get in the mix. Definite “glue” guy.
  • Robbie Ouzts might already be one of the most popular guys on the team. Did you hear the stadium react after he caught that pass last night? Real football fans love a fullback, and it seems like the Seahawks got a good one with Ouzts....
