Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has spoken publicly for the first time since being suspended from coaching at his alma mater, Miami Northwestern, and defended the actions that led to the suspension. According to the veteran NFL quarterback, he was just trying to protect his players, whom he led to a state championship in 2024.

On Tuesday, August 5, Teddy Bridgewater — who last played in the NFL with the Detroit Lions in 2023 before retiring at the end of the season — signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Bucs following his resignation from Miami Northwestern.

Bridgewater’s suspension and subsequent resignation from Miami Northwestern came after the veteran NFL QB posted on Facebook in an effort to solicit donations for his team, which he already invested over $30,000 of his own money into.

According to Bridgewater’s post, he spent $14,000 to conduct a camp for players with “three hot meals a day from local black owned restaurants and a snack on some of those days,” $9,500 for matching clothing, $300 per week to paint the field, $1,300 a week for recovery trucks, $2,200 for the team’s weekly pregame meal, and $700 per week on Uber rides.

The former Vikings, Saints, Panthers, Broncos, Dolphins and Lions signal-caller was found to be “providing what were deemed impermissible benefits” and was suspended seven days after the post.

“I’m protective, and I’m a father first before anything. Those players became my sons,” Bridgewater explained.

“Miami Northwestern is in a tough neighborhood. Sometimes things can happen when kids are walking home. I was just trying to protect them,” he said.
