14-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift made headlines on Wednesday with a surprise appearance on boyfriend (and Kansas City Chiefs tight end) Travis Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast. While seated next to Kelce, Swift announced that her upcoming 12th studio album — called “The Life of a Showgirl,” will be released October 3.
The Chiefs’ locker room already had a lot to discuss after Kelce’s GQ cover started making the rounds earlier that same day. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes admitted he was caught off guard by Swift’s appearance and album announcement.
“No, it surprised me too,” Mahomes confessed. “I mean, I knew before y’all did, just because they called me after the podcast was done.”
But then Mahomes corrected himself.
“They didn’t call me,” he said. “They called Brittany — and then I was like in the back of the FaceTime.”
He shared that he was “excited” for the album and praised Swift’s artistry, noting that the Kelce brothers’ podcast is an ideal, authentic setting for her announcement.
“Just knowing Taylor,” said the quarterback, “and seeing the process from just a little bit closer of how she makes the albums, it’s going to be amazing because how much work she puts into it. What better place to announce it than the ‘New Heights’ podcast, where I feel like she can be herself and showcase who she is?”
Meanwhile, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid took a more laid-back approach, telling Wednesday’s media seesion that he would probably not be tuning in for the podcast.
“I’m, like, really old,” said the 67-year-old Reid, grinning. “[But] my grandkids will be all over it.”
Having coached Kelce for over a decade, Reid has been there for nearly aspect of his star tight end’s career. Now, he — and almost everyoone on Earth, it seems — is also seeing a new personal chapter unfold.
“I’m happy for them,” said Reid. “Both of them like each other — and what a plus that is — [and] they care about each other. I think that’s the most important thing.
“The older you get, [the more] you want these guys to have somebody they can settle down with — and that whole deal… I think it’s a neat deal for them.”
