The San Francisco 49ers have one preseason game to go before they shift all of their attention to the Seattle Seahawks. While it’s likely the coaching staff has begun to prepare for their divisional rival to start the season, they still have to manage a way to get their wide receivers a good look this weekend.
Per Matt Maiocco and Matt Barrows, the Niners have made a change at quarterback. Again. Two days ago, the 49ers announced the signing of quarterback Nate Sudfeld. This came after news that Mac Jones suffered an injury and would miss the final preseason game.
According to Maiocco and Barrows, Sudfeld wasn’t at practice on Thursday, nor is he on the roster. Perhaps the team had a change of heart? Maybe Sudfeld wasn’t healthy. Or, Kyle Shanahan and company were more comfortable with where Tanner Mordecai is at with the offense than Sudfeld, who has been out of the league for a couple of years.
So, after being released, signed, and released again, Mordecai is back on the 49ers’ roster for what’s likely the final time, unless the Niners stash him on the practice squad. Mordecai and Carter Bradley figure to see the bulk of snaps in the Niners’ preseason finale. Shanahan was unsure whether Brock Purdy would play.
