One of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ recent additions is happy to be reunited with the team.

The Pittsburgh Steelers reunited with a familiar face on Wednesday, bringing back quarterback/wide receiver John Rhys Plumlee to their practice squad, and it’s safe to say he’s happy to be back where his NFL career began.

“Super, super excited. Obviously, been a crazy journey one year in the NFL, so it’s good to be somewhere that’s familiar,” Plumlee said. “Super excited to see a bunch of the guys. My rookie class, super excited to see them, and then obviously, everyone in this building for giving me the opportunity early on.”

Plumlee, 24, was an umdrafted rookie out of the 2024 NFL Draft, but he quickly caught on with the Steelers. He spent training camp with the team , serving as the fourth quarterback while also being experimented with at receiver, kick returner and punt returner before being released that August.

Since then, Plumlee has bounced around the league, spending time with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2024) and Seattle Seahawks (2025), who he signed a reserve/future contract with in January and was cut last month.

In order to make the Seahawks roster, Plumlee had to complete his position change from quarterback to wide receiver.

“Go to Seattle, and I go to work out and I throw. Kind of unknowingly after the workout, they come and ask me what size gloves that I wear,” Plumlee continued. “They said, ‘Congrats, you made the team but you’re in the receiver room.’ So I was like, ‘Alright sweet, I got a job.’ So I’ve been learning. I’ve been crafting. Learning from a bunch of guys. DK (Metcalf) helped me early on there.”

It’s unclear what the Steelers’ plans for Plumlee are, but it’s safe to assume they’re going to do their best to take advantage of his athleticism in more ways than one.

Plumlee is excited about that challenge with the knowledge that several other players have made a similar position switch at the next level.

“You look and see the guys that have done it,” he said. “Trying to be the best version of John Rhys every day. Whether that’s in the receiver room or the quarterback room, I want to mold myself to be the best version of me.”
