Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is by far the NFL’s most untouchable player, but it didn’t stop an NFC team from at least trying back in 2022.

The Chiefs altered NFL history forever when they traded up via the Buffalo Bills to take Patrick Mahomes 10th overall in 2017. Fast forward eight years later, and the team has won five conference titles and three Super Bowl rings, with Mahomes claiming two MVP awards (2018 to 2022) as well.

In the 2020 offseason, Mahomes and the Chiefs agreed to a mammoth 10-year contract extension worth $450 million. Here we are in 2025, and there remains zero reason to believe the Chiefs and Mahomes will split over the next decade.

Back in March 2022, John Keim of ESPN reported that the Washington Commanders “reached out to every team to inquire about a quarterback’s availability and the cost,” including the Chiefs with Mahomes.

The popular ML Football X/Twitter account reposted the story:

Of course, the Commanders never got their hands on the best quarterback in the game. They had to settle on a trade for Carson Wentz, who had one disappointing year in Washington before getting released.

After an uneven year from Sam Howell in 2023, the Commanders finally got their new franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 pick of 2024.

Patrick Mahomes & Chiefs Look To Bounce Back From Ugly Super Bowl 59 Loss

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs suffered a brutal 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, denying them of the first three-peat in the Lombardi Trophy era.

Kansas City has played in seven straight AFC Championship games since Mahomes became the starter in 2018, winning five of them. History suggests they’ll have little problem getting back to the final four, but we’ll see if they can shake off the Super Bowl defeat and claim that fourth championship together.
