An AFC rival reportedly tried to sell the farm to the Cincinnati Bengals to land Joe Burrow, but to no avail.
When the Bengals landed the No. 1 pick in 2020, they had the obvious call to draft Joe Burrow after a historic year for the LSU Tigers. Fast forward five years later, and they certainly have no regrets.
As Miami Dolphins fans unfortunately remember, the team drafted Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 pick over future superstar Justin Herbert. Tagovailoa was just benched in favor of Zach Wilson after a Monday night loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In a stunning new update, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Miami actually tried to land Joe Burrow at the 2020 NFL Draft. Their offer to Cincy? Four first-round picks, but the Bengals wouldn’t even listen:
“Long before the Dolphins benched Tua Tagovailoa and turned to rookie Quinn Ewers, they made a push to land the quarterback they’ll face Sunday — Joe Burrow.
Before the 2020 NFL draft, the Dolphins offered the Bengals four first-round picks in exchange for the No. 1 overall selection and the ability to draft Burrow, league sources told ESPN.
The Bengals declined to even engage in discussions and shut down the trade inquiry before it could gain any traction, according to sources.”
While Burrow continues to play at an MVP-like level? Schefter reports that Miami is “prepared to move on from” Tua Tagovailoa in the offseason. A stunning turn of events, a year after handing him a $212.4 million extension.
To their credit, the Dolphins churned out four straight winning seasons from 2020 to 2023 despite inconsistent play with Tagovailoa.
But if the Dolphins had Joe Burrow throwing to the likes of Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill instead of Tagovailoa? They could have easily emerged as a prime Super Bowl contender by now.
Clearly, Cincinnati made the right call to keep Burrow. Though he has hinted at frustrations with the Bengals this year, there’s no telling how much worse the franchise would be without No. 9 behind center.
