All-Pro wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. recently revealed that he’s had conversations with four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers about joining the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Beckham, who was released by the Miami Dolphins in December, is still in search of his next NFL team.
“I love him, and we’ve had conversations,” Beckham said on the Club Random Podcast hosted by Bill Maher. “I won’t say that it’s not a possibility and I won’t say that I haven’t had any communication.”
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that Beckham has drawn interest from several teams and plans to play somewhere in 2025.
Beckham, 32, played in only nine games with Miami last season. He had nine catches on only 18 targets for 55 yards.
As a 31-year-old with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, Beckham caught 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns. He was likely assuming similar production when he signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Dolphins last offseason.
Beckham earned his Super Bowl ring with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. He has settled into a role as a bit part player after passing the 1,000-yard receiving mark in five of his first six seasons.
Since then, Beckham has gone through a series of health problems that limited him to seven games in 2020. He forced his way out of Cleveland mid-season in 2021, setting up a trade to the Rams, but an injury cost him the entire 2022 season. He played 14 games with Baltimore last season and missed the first four games of this season.
The 5-foot-11, 200-pound receiver did not have more than 17 yards receiving in a game this season, as the Miami passing offense struggled with Tua Tagovailoa out with injury. It was expected when Beckham signed in Miami that he’d be the team’s third receiver behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but the extent those two have dominated the target share has been unexpected.
The Steelers’ wide receivers room currently includes DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Robert Woods, Ben Skowronek, Scotty Miller, Lance McCutcheon, Brandon Johnson, Ke’Shawn Williams and Roc Taylor. To say the least, the Steelers’ current crop of wide receivers leaves a lot to be desired.
Despite the lack of depth, general manager Omar Khan has a great deal of confidence in the current crops of receivers.
“I feel really good about that receiver room,” Khan said during an interview on the 102.5 WDVE’s Morning Show on Tuesday. “In my opening press conference, I got a bunch of questions comparing it to last year. And to me, it’s not even close. I mean, you guys saw some of it this past weekend … Calvin (Austin) is banged up a little bit, but we’ll get him back. But Roman Wilson and Brandon Johnson, you saw the emergence of young guys like Ke’Shawn (Williams) and obviously we added DK (Metcalf). I feel good about this group. And when we traded for Jonnu [Smith], I loved his versatility.”
