The Chiefs go for an unprecedented threepeat
The 2024-25 NFL season comes to a close today with Super Bowl LIX. The Kansas City Chiefs go for an unprecedented threepeat when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 pm EST.
The 17-2 Kansas City Chiefs come into this game as two time defending Super Bowl champions, seeking to become the only team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. The Chiefs are coming off a 32 - 29 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Conference Championship Game round last week. Other than a final week regular season loss to the Denver Broncos, in which the Chiefs rested their starters, the Chiefs have lost just once all season, to the Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs have lived dangerously this season, going 12-0 in one score games. Superstar Patrick Mahomes had arguably the worst season of his career, at least partially because he lacked weapons, with #1 receiver Rashee Rice out for the year, #1 running back Isiah Pacheco out for most of the year, and star tight end Travis Kelce clearly on the decline. As a result, the Chiefs have had to rely on an excellent defense this season, with the offense performing at middling levels most of the year.
The 17-3 Philadelphia Eagles come into this game winners of 15 of their last 16 games. Last week they blew out the Washington Commanders 55 - 23 in the NFC Conference Championship Game. The Eagles feature the NFL’s #1 defense in yards allowed and #2 defense in points allowed. The Eagles run the ball more than any other team in the NFL. The Eagles also feature a top 10 offense and defense in yards, points, first downs and turnovers. This is a deep, well balanced team.
The Chiefs are 9-2 against playoff teams this season, while the Eagles are 8-2 against playoff teams. The last time these two teams met in the Super Bowl was just two years ago, when the Chiefs pulled out a 38 -35 victory.
