The Pittsburgh Steelers had a clear biggest winner in Week 1, according to one of their former Super Bowl champions.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had several players who helped them escape with their 34-32 win over the New York Jets in Week 1. However, former Steelers safety Ryan Clark believes there’s one clear winner from the weekend.
“The biggest winner in the entire Steelers organization is General Manager Omar Khan. The Steelers don’t sign big free agents, they don’t make huge trades… but Omar Khan does. Aaron Rodgers had one of his best games since wearing a Packer uniform, but he wasn’t the only one,” Clark wrote on X. “(DK Metcalf), (Jonnu Smith) & (Jalen Ramsey) all made game winning plays. It was one hell of an introduction for the newest Steelers!”
The Steelers did have several new faces on their team make an immediate impact. Rodgers became the first quarterback to ever throw for four or more touchdowns in their Steelers debut. He also completed 22 of his 30 passes for 244 yards.
Wide receiver DK Metcalf, who Pittsburgh acquired from the Seattles Seahawks this offseason, reeled in four catches for a team-high 83 yards, and tight end Jonnu Smith, who was also acquired this offseason from the Miami Dolphins, led the team with five catches while also finding the end zone.
The contributions from the Steelers’ new faces didn’t stop there, either. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey made one of the biggest plays of the game, breaking up a pass intended for Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson on a 4th-and-3 with just 25 seconds left in the game.
Safeties Juan Thornhill and Chuck Clark, who both joined as free agents, also combined for 12 tackles and one for a loss.
It was truly a masterclass offseason by Khan once again. He built a team capable of being competitive this season while also keeping the team’s future plans in mind. Only time will tell how far the 2025 Steelers team can go, but Week 1 already proved Khan’s aggressiveness is paying off.
