It’s only October, but Tennessee Titans coaching rumors are already swirling after moving on from Brian Callahan following a 1-5 start to the season. While the Titans have promoted senior offensive assistant Mike McCoy to be their head coach on an interim basis, eventually, Tennessee will need to name a permanent replacement.
The rumor mill really started churning after a Saturday report suggesting Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian had some interest in returning to the NFL as a head coach. Specifically, Sarkisian reportedly had an interest in eventually filling the Titans’ coaching vacancy.
Yet, after Sarkisian’s Longhorns emerged with a narrow 45-38 win over Mississippi State, the coach had a lot to say about what he says is an erroneous report. One might even say Sarkisian was ticked off.
Sarkisian, who was clearly fired up about the report, wasn’t done. He wanted to take this time to send a message, not just to the Longhorns’ fanbase, but also to the media.
Sarkisian may feel like the report was “absolutely ridiculous,” but the Titans would likely love to have a respected coach like Sarkisian take over the reins. In fact, we have to wonder whether Tennessee was the one who started the rumor in the first place, hoping to drum up interest.
Either way, from the way Sarkisian reacted, it seems as if the Titans will have to find their next dream coach candidate, and hope they deliver better results than Callahan did.
Sarkisian has a 90-54 record across 12 seasons as a college head coach, and he even has previous NFL coaching experience, just not as a head coach. Sarkisian previously served as the QB coach for the Raiders in 2004 and as the Falcons’ offensive coordinator from 2017 to 2018, but there may not be any truth to the rumors of him returning to the NFL for a third time.
