The Kansas City Chiefs may be in the midst of a dynastic run, but fans in Missouri remain a little on edge with the team’s long-term home and future still uncertain.

Arrowhead Stadium has been the home of the Kansas City Chiefs since 1972, the third-oldest active NFL venue (Soldier Field and Lambeau Field opened in 1924 and 1957, respectively). The club’s lease at Arrowhead expires after the 2030 season.

If the Chiefs need a new stadium, there’s a real possibility of the organization moving from Kansas City, Missouri, to Kansas City, Kansas. Of course, the two cities are only three miles apart.

According to Nate Taylor of The Athletic, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt prefers his club’s next home to be a domed stadium. Taylor noted that Hunt, “can visualize the potential next chapter of his franchise, one that could begin in just six years.”

More from Taylor:

“The Chiefs’ stadium question is about to reach a couple of key checkpoints. By the end of June, the franchise hopes to decide which side of the Missouri-Kansas state line the team will play its home games after the 2030 season. With that timeframe in mind, Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe has called the general assembly back for a Tuesday special session, in part to discuss the stadium tax-incentive program.

The most ambitious option for the Chiefs — who are considering renovating Arrowhead Stadium or building a state-of-the-art venue — involves the construction of a dome in Kansas that would cost an estimated $3 billion.”

As Taylor noted, getting a domed stadium would put the Kansas City Chiefs in a position to host other marquee sporting events like college games and a Super Bowl. Arrowhead Stadium has never hosted a Super Bowl.

The Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans are building new stadiums, which will open in 2026 and 2027, respectively. The Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns are also working on plans for new stadiums.

Kansas City Chiefs Open Season vs. Los Angeles Chargers

The defending AFC champions will look to kick off 2025 on a high note when they play the Los Angeles Chargers at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil, as part of the NFL International Series.
