Study: Acrisure Stadium Traffic Among Worst in NFL

The Pittsburgh Steelers will hold their home opener at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. kickoff scheduled against the Seattle Seahawks. But Steelers fans will be leaving their homes from around the area a lot earlier than that.

New research shows that Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh has some of the worst traffic of any NFL venue, meaning it takes Steelers fans the third-longest to travel to the game.

The study by Pickswise gave the Pittsburgh venue a 34.3 score out of 100, when it comes to ease of vehicular travel. The only stadiums with wore traffic situations are Soldier Field in Chicago and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The average time to travel 10km during a Pittsburgh traffic rush is 21 minutes and 16 seconds, the 13th-slowest of the 30 NFL venues. All that traffic contributes to Pittsburgh’s IQAir air quality index of 81, nearly double the league average.

“Steelers fans are known for their dedication, often braving tough conditions to cheer on their team, but this study shows that the journey to Acrisure Stadium can be just as testing as the game itself,” Pickswise managing editor Andrew Wilsher said. “With congestion spiking above the NFL average and some of the league’s highest pollution levels, it’s clear that getting to the stadium on gameday isn’t always smooth sailing for the Pittsburgh faithful.”

There are other options for getting to Acrisure Stadium besides driving to Pittsburgh’s North Shore. The Pittsburgh Regional Transit “T” subway has a stop right outside of Gate C of the stadium. The Gateway Clipper Fleet shuttles fans from the South Side.

ALCO Parking lots around the stadium open five hours before the event, so fans looking to beat the traffic rush can arrive as early as 8 a.m.
