If you thought the NFL offseason was already enough, just wait until Stephen A. Smith gets a few minutes to riff on live television. On Thursday morning’s episode of First Take, Stephen A. Smith didn’t go viral for one of his trademark rants, but for a light roast at his ESPN colleague Kevin Clark.

The show had shifted into a discussion about the AFC North and Aaron Rodgers’ impact, with Clark joining the desk for the segment. But before they could really dive into the football talk, Smith took a playful detour.

“You look like a member of the Geek Squad from Best Buy or something,” Smith said, eyeing Clark with that familiar smile. “But let me tell you something: you’re pretty damn good. I like you. You’re doing good. Keep up the good work. I like it. I just felt I needed to say it.”

Clark took the jab like a champ, laughing it off along with the rest of the panel. He even shot back with a quick line of his own, “And I can fix your laptop.”

Mixed Emotions Over Smith’s Jab

As expected, the internet had thoughts. Some fans were rolling with laughter. Others? Not so much.

One viewer on X joked, “This is insulting. @bykevinclark is far more like grown up Randall Weems from Recess: School’s Out.”

The moment felt unscripted, lighthearted, and vintage Smith, but not everyone appreciated it. Some users found it awkward and out of place.

“People actually watch this show?” one commenter asked.

“What a dog shit network,” another wrote, clearly unimpressed.

There was also lingering frustration over ESPN’s recent changes, with Shannon Sharpe’s permanent exit drawing criticism. A few fans noted that segments like these only highlight what they feel the show is now lacking.

Still, Smith seemed to mean no harm. His jab came with a rare on-air compliment, and Clark seemed genuinely amused. For now, First Take continues doing what it does best, giving up opinions, laughs, and debates long after the segment ends.
